South by Southwestward

Rick Banister

So I decided to submit a panel to SXSW this year. I'm not the most vocal/outspoken/social member of P'unk Ave, but I rank amongst the most opinionated. As the lead designer here I touch nearly all of our work, running it through our aesthetic and functional filters, making sure everything makes the cut. But where do those filters come from? How is an aesthetic created? What makes something more functional as opposed to simply functional?

I sort of ask myself these questions all the time, and only sort of come up with answers. I took SXSW 2012 as an opportunity to maybe answer them formally, and get some ideas from other people as well.

So if you want to hear what I think, or tell me I'm wrong, or simply ensure that there is a least one panel about design, you'll have to vote for my panel.
