Creative Connector

I have known for some time that I was named one of Philadelphia's 76 Creative Connectors. WHYY/NewsWorks and Leadership Philadelphia identified this group through an online citizen survey:

Leadership Philadelphia has compiled a list of the top 76 Creative Connectors, members of the local arts and culture community who are the glue that binds it together...

Connectors is a term drawn from Malcolm Gladwell's famous book, The Tipping Point, referring to people who serve as civic hubs without needing to gain credit or riches from their work. Our first Connectors' list looked at the civic sphere generally, the second at younger leaders.

I must say that am very honored for this recognition.

I have also been hesitant to make a big deal about it since I consider it a privilege to be able to do creative work and to make some type of difference in our city. I have always said that I will not be happy until an artist is the mayor of Philadelphia. Artists know how to solve problems, artists have an open mind, and artists are true leaders.

I am so happy to see that Leadership Philadelphia has realized that creative people make up the leadership present and future of our city. The people on this list are doing amazing things to transform the city, not just entertain us. This is serious business with serious results.

As Daniel Pink posited in A Whole New Mind, the MFA is the new MBA. I am glad that this group is being honored and can't wait until one of us (or another creative thinker) is elected mayor of Philadelphia. I think we deserve that as a city. Don't you?
